Everyone wants to look nice.
For most people good skin, hair, teeth and nails are the building blocks for looking and feeling good. I would also include myself in this generalisation, but I wouldn’t say that they are my main priorities in life by any means. Having said this however, I know how they can greatly affect our confidence – for better or for worse – so this is why I consider them to be important!
Just in case you haven’t already noticed, I’m not a perfect human-being and these aspects of my life are far from “Hollywood standard” just as the rest of me isn’t!
So, let’s start with skin.
I have been fortunate enough to have escaped the teenage acne curse and have had a relatively good complexion all of my life. However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t ever wake up with some juicers on my face!
Normally I can cover them up with my fringe but if they are really bad I may put a dab of concealer on. This is a rarity though as I will 99% of the time let them face the world as I don’t think clogging them up will solve the issue of their existence!
I also have really sensitive skin and have in the past often woken up to find a nice rash on my face with no idea as to where it came from or why! The worst part is they normally take at least three days to die down!
In terms of make up, I really don’t think girls need to wear a lot to look pretty. It’s more of a self esteem thing to wear make up anyway. Less is more. Here are some celebrity examples of how this is the case:
Personally I think they all look WAY better with less make up on.
Now to hair…
I am boring with my hair, once I find a style that I like and think suits me I’ll stick to it for ages! (much to my sister’s dislike!). Sometimes I do get an urge to do something crazy but I know I’ll just regret it in the long run! I’ve never even died my hair but in the light I have many shades of browns and coppers and blondes. I’m gutted I’m not a redhead as it runs in my family but maybe my children will be – ginger babies are so cute!
Having said this, I did have pretty awesome hair as a baby myself!
I do however have one hair disaster experience that still haunts me to this day…
I was approximately 7 at the time and it was the day before I was due to be a bridesmaid at my cousin’s wedding. Me and my sister had gone in for a “trim” at the local hairdressers, but what I got was far from a trim…
Put it this way, I sobbed all the way home and did not smile in any of the wedding pictures! Here is the hair cut of doom …
* Can you sense my jealousy of my sister’s hair?!
Bad times.
Teeth – I have always been funny about teeth. I hated them when they were wobbly as a child so would leave them until they were practically hanging from a scrap of gum before I would let my dad give them the final push to get them out once and for all. I would sob and scream but the moment it was out I would have a gleaming smile on my face as if to say “I am so proud of myself!” Ha ha!
When I was about 11 I found out I was born with 4 missing teeth. This means that 4 of my baby teeth will not be replaced by adult teeth when they fall out. Fortunately 3 of them are at the back of my mouth but the other is right at the front! Needless to say, the front one has already come out and my natural smile looks like this:
But thanks to my denture named Jeffery that I have had since the young age of 12, my smile looks a little more complete!
* I might add, I haven’t had the same fake tooth for 8 years as that would be gross. Many have broken so new ones were necessary!
** Hopefully soon I’ll get a permanent implant as I’ve spent my whole teenage life with a denture 😥 Waaa!
Apart from that, I like my teeth and look after them well meaning I have never had a cavity or a filling! Yay Go Me!
Finally, nails…
I go through phases of biting and growing. But worst of all I bite the skin around them. This is something I do when I am anxious or stressed but since doing this blog I have pretty much stopped – at least this is good for something!
* This is as long as I can stand to grow my nails before I get agitated with them!
** Picking at the skin. Not pretty.
* Freshly cut! (ok, I bit them on this particular occassion!)
* It’s not as feminine looking, but it’s much comfier having short nails! And getting dirt under long nails is so nasty!
So, once again you can see that my body is not perfect (or even complete in some areas)! But I have learnt to live with it and try to take care of what I have!
Whether you have acne, braces, glasses or no problems at all, don’t let that stop you from smiling!
Happy end-of-the-week! x
